The all-new Ford Explorer is set to introduce a high-performance variant, the 2020 Ford Explorer ST. We'll discuss what's coming in 2019 and the following year in this preview of the ever-popular Ford Explorer SUV.
What Is the 2020 Ford Explorer ST?
Ford's popular three-row crossover SUV is due for a much-anticipated redesign. Although not much is known about the upcoming lineup, Ford has announced an upcoming Explorer ST model. This crossover will replace the Sport trim in the current Explorer lineup, giving buyers an extra focus on performance.
What Will Be Under the Hood?
The upcoming Ford Explorer ST is rumored to feature an upgraded version of the Sport's twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine. The future version of this engine will take output from 365 horsepower to 400 horsepower, amplifying performance as you take off from a standing stop or surge ahead of slow-moving vehicles.
This model's big engine is widely expected to send power to all four wheels for optimal performance around turns and down winding roads. Spy shots show a super-sporty model - probably the Explorer ST - featuring both split-spoke wheels and dual-exhaust tailpipes.
What Is the CD6 Modular Platform?
Before 2011, the Explorer came standard with rear-wheel drive. The upcoming generation is rumored to feature the new CD6 modular platform, which can accommodate front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive performance setups. Although the Explorer ST will most likely come standard with all-wheel drive, other Explorer models may very well come standard with rear-wheel drive once again. This setup lends itself to increased utility, including optimal towing performance.
When Will the 2020 Ford Explorer ST Be Available?
The upcoming Ford Explorer ST is expected to officially debut early in 2019, perhaps at the Detroit auto show. It should go on sale shortly after its official debut.
