Compact commercial vans are a small business's dream machine. They'll get you and your deliveries, your products, or your services to your customers. They can literally drive your business. But which one is best? In this comparison guide, we'll look at the 2018 Ford Transit Connect and the Ram Promaster City. We'll help you determine which is right for you and your business.
Storage and Payload: Ford Transit Connect
The million-dollar question is what can it hold? The Ford Transit Connect, which slots just below the larger Ford Transit, comes in a couple of sizes and configurations, but at best has a whopping 149 cubic feet of storage space. And, when properly equipped it can haul up to 2000 pounds. For something this size, that's impressive storage space.
The similarly-sized Ram Promaster City offers less, just 131 cubic feet of storage and a maximum haul of 1886 pounds. If you want to deliver big orders in just one trip, the Transit Connect is your van.
Fuel Economy: Ram Promaster City
Saving on fueling costs is just smart business. The 2018 Ford Transit Connect gets 20 city miles and 27 highway miles per gallon. That's slightly better than the passenger variant, whose seats make it slightly heavier. There's only one engine option on the Transit Connect so that number is a constant no matter what other options you do or don't pick up.
By comparison, the Ram Promaster City gets 21 city miles and 28 city miles per gallon. It's very nearly a tie here, but the win goes to the Promaster City. It can save you a little money at the pump, but not much.
Performance: Ford Transit Connect
In addition to better fuel economy, the size of compact commercial vans provides two additional benefits. One, it fits in a normal garage for easy storage. Two, it's much more maneuverable. And that's definitely true of the 2018 Ford Transit Connect. We're impressed with how nimble it feels, despite its height.
The 2018 Ram Promaster City is also pretty nimble but shifts awkwardly through its nine-speed transmission and there's a lot of excess vibration and noise, especially as it idles. While it offers great acceleration, there's a little more sway around corners than on the Transit Connect. It's close here, but we're going to give this one to the Transit.
All other things being nearly equal, the 2018 Ford Transit Connect wins out with its storage space. At the end of the work day, that's what you need and the Transit delivers.
