Some said the days of full-size, body-on-frame SUVs were numbered, but they were wrong. These large road warriors are still alive and kicking, with a few market leaders still leading the pack. If you need a reasonable towing capacity and the capability to seat up to eight people, a full-size SUV can deliver all that and more. But which one is the best? We put two of the biggest names in the class, the 2017 Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Tahoe, toe-to-toe to see who dominates.
2017 Ford Expedition vs Chevrolet Tahoe
People mover or comfortable ride?
Both of these SUV powerhouses can accommodate eight passengers, but how comfortably they do it is key to their success. The Expedition is larger than the Tahoe on the outside, so it should also offer more room for people and stuff on the inside. You'll get more headroom in the Ford with 38.3 inches in the third-row and 39.8 inches in the second row, and the 39.1 inches of legroom in the second row is also more than the Chevy offers.
The one advantage the Tahoe has over the Expedition is extra head room in the front, but in every other area it gives you less. Even in cargo space, the 94.7 cu.-ft (with the second and third rows flattened) in the Chevy is considerably less than the 108.3 cu.-ft. offered by the Ford, so round two also goes to the Expedition.
Which loves gas stations most?
The 2017 Ford Expedition is a little more frugal than its predecessors, thanks to a relatively new engine. It's no Fiesta when it comes to fuel economy, but 15 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway and 18 mpg combined is pretty good for such a big, capable vehicle.
It might come as a surprise, then, that the Tahoe is actually more fuel-efficient than the Explorer. A two-wheel drive Tahoe is rated at ,a href="http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=37677">16 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg combined. Though it's a slim margin, we're giving this one to the Tahoe. Anything that saves at the fuel pump, especially a large vehicle like these, is worth celebrating!
